The volcanoes of Kamchatka... World Heritage Site

Geysers, volcanoes, majestic cone-shaped mountains, lakes, limitless glaciers, vast forests, rivers full of salmon and parks with wild animals.  Kamchatka… a volcanic paradise in the kingdom of the grizzly bear.

Kamchatka is without exaggeration one of the most spectacular regions in the whole world. This unique open-air ecological museum occupies an area of 470,000 sq. km and has 5 national parks, 17 state animal areas, and 169 unique natural treasures.

Kamchatka is a peninsula located in the far eastern part of Russia surrounded by the waters of the Pacific Ocean. It is one of the most spectacular Russian regions, almost a virgin land, very little inhabited and with a very special geology. It remained closed to the rest of the world for more than 50 years, during Soviet times due to the presence of top-secret military infrastructures.

The orography is marked by two volcanic-type mountain ranges, whose volcanoes are active. Specifically, of the 160 volcanoes found in the area, 29 of them are constantly active. This makes earthquakes and volcanic eruptions frequent. The highest point is the Kliuchevskoi volcano, with almost 5,000 m of altitude. Another notable mountain for its incredible aesthetics is the Kronotsky volcano. It is the perfect volcano prototype with a cone without irregularities. It is seen by many as the most beautiful volcano on Earth. Its volcanoes are part of the Pacific Ring of Fire and have been on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 1997.

As for its climate, Kamchatka has diverse climates and natural environments, but in general it can be said that it is cold with abundant rainfall. This has contributed to the fact that it has a rich wildlife with the grizzly bear as an emblematic species… a real immersion in a wild nature.

Another factor that makes Kamchatka such a special place is that it is home to the world's largest variety of salmon. Between the months of June and October, the rivers of this peninsula fill with hundreds of fish of this species, which go back up the riverbed in search of a spawning spot. This leads to the appearance of a huge number of grizzly bears that end their hibernation, suddenly becoming the mighty Grizzly Bear Empire in Russia. Added to this spectacle of nature is the presence of other animals such as otters and sea eagles.
